Congressman Engel: Deadline for January 1st Health Insurance Coverage Extended for NY

WASHINGTON, DC—Congressman Eliot L. Engel (D-NY), a senior member of the House Energy and Commerce Health Subcommittee, encourages constituents to sign up for health insurance through NY State of Health, the official health insurance marketplace for New Yorkers.

While open enrollment for January 1st coverage was slated to close yesterday, New Yorkers can continue to weigh plan options and consider enrolling in or renewing plans through December 19 and still be covered on January 1.

“I am pleased that my constituents will be given this extra time to browse available plans, have their questions answered and get covered in time for the new year,” Congressman Engel said. “I encourage all New Yorkers to take advantage of this extended deadline, and to gift themselves the peace of mind that comes with high-quality insurance coverage this holiday season.”

More than 2 million New Yorkers signed up for health insurance through NY State of Health during last year’s open enrollment. Nearly 90 percent of these enrollees were uninsured previously.

In addition to first-time applicants, customers with existing coverage must visit the marketplace by Saturday to renew their plans in time for the new year. The deadline for the Small Business Marketplace is still December 15th for those seeking coverage by January 1st, though enrollment in the Small Business Marketplace is open year-round.
