Congressman Engel Honors Teachers

Washington, D.C. – Congressman Eliot Engel, a senior member on the House Energy and Commerce Committee, commended teachers for their work on the first day of Teacher Appreciation Week.

“I taught in the New York City school system before entering elected office. I found teaching to be as demanding as it is rewarding. Education is the foundation for future success, and teachers inspire our youth to achieve great things. America will not be able to compete globally, if we continue to shortchange students with overcrowd classrooms or underpaid teachers.”

“All states should use New York as the model for expanding access to early childhood education. New York recently expanded pre-kindergarten to all four-year-olds, an investment in our future that we were able to make today.”

“I have fought hard to preserve federal funding for education. It’s an investment that we can’t afford to cut.”
