Engel Statement on the signing into law of The PEPFAR Stewardship and Oversight Act of 2013

New York– Rep. Eliot L. Engel, the senior Democratic Member of the House Foreign Affairs Committee, released the following statement regarding the signing into law of The PEPFAR Stewardship and Oversight Act of 2013.

"The President's signature of this important piece of legislation signals the continued commitment of the United States to preventing, treating, and ultimately ending the scourge of HIV/AIDS around the world.  PEPFAR started as, and remains, the largest commitment by any individual country in the world to combat a single disease internationally.  When President Bush signed the original PEPFAR bill into law ten years ago, nobody could have predicted within the span of a decade, we would be discussing how to achieve an AIDS-free generation.  To accomplish this ambitious but realistic goal, we must sustain the incredible progress that has been made in fighting this epidemic and continue to invest in scientifically sound methods to expand access to HIV/AIDS prevention, treatment and care.  PEPFAR has been a tremendous success and I am pleased to see President Obama sign into law this important, bipartisan piece of legislation."
