ENGEL STATEMENT SUPPORTS OBAMA CALL FOR FISCAL SANITY

“Over the past five years our economy has been growing and our unemployment rate decreasing. But these accomplishments could have been much greater if Republicans in Congress stopped their obsessive efforts to repeal the Affordable Care Act, and instead addressed the economy and the need for jobs.

"As Congress begins another Appropriations bill debate, we need to focus on funding essential federal government programs, such as aid to education, air traffic control, law enforcement, veterans’ assistance, and repairing our crumbling roads and bridges. Congress must avoid shutting down the federal government, and also address the debt ceiling in a way that doesn’t wreck our economy.

“The president has presented plans to Congress to help the economy and the middle class. We need to act on them in a constructive manner, not rant about ‘Obamacare’- while health care costs grow at the slowest rate in 50 years - and take endless votes that are destined go nowhere. It’s the economy we must work on, and it is ridiculous to focus on anything else.”
