Rep. Engel Says Robert McDonald's Tenure Would Mark New Chapter for Veterans Affairs

Washington, D.C. – Congressman Eliot Engel, a senior member of the House Energy and Commerce Committee, welcomed the nomination of Robert A. McDonald for the Secretary of Veterans Affairs.

“I was outraged by allegations that numerous veterans died while awaiting treatment at VA medical centers. Negligence has no place within our medical system. Our veterans deserve better, and should expect more from the country they so valiantly served. We owe them nothing less for their untold heroism and sacrifice.

“Robert McDonald brings years of executive-level, management experience in the private sector, and is a West Point graduate who has served in the Army. I expect that Robert’s appointment as the new Secretary of Veterans Affairs will begin a new chapter for the Department of Veterans Affairs.

“I would also like to thank Acting Secretary Sloan Gibson, who is a West Point classmate of Secretary-designate McDonald, for taking the reins during the transition. Sloan helped to right the agency’s course after General Shinseki’s resignation, and will stay on as Deputy Secretary.

“I am confident that Robert and Sloan will work well together to serve the needs of our men and women who have worn the uniform.”
