I am proud to be a member of the House Pro-Choice Caucus and to have a 100% voting record with the Planned Parenthood Action Fund. In addition, I was honored to receive the Congressional Defender of Women’s Rights Award from the Westchester Coalition for Legal Abortion.

Engel Statement On Equal Pay Day

Washington, D.C.–Congressman Eliot L. Engel issued the following statement on Equal Pay Day:

“Today is Equal Pay Day—the day three months into the new year that marks the extra time women have to work for their wages to reach the equivalent of what men were paid the previous year. Put another way, it takes women 15 months to earn what men make on average in 12 months. This is a real problem, and to address it, House Democrats just last week passed the Paycheck Fairness Act.

“Our bill requires employers to prove any pay disparity that may exist among equivalent workers is legitimate; prohibits them from relying on salary history in determining future pay, so that pay discrimination does not follow women from job to job; bans retaliation against workers who voluntarily discuss or disclose their wages; and ensures women can receive the same remedies for sex-based pay discrimination currently available to those subjected to discrimination based on race and ethnicity.

“We need to put a stop to this unfair pay disparity, which generally follows women throughout their careers. I was proud to support the Paycheck Fairness Act, and I urge the Senate to promptly follow the House’s lead on equal pay for equal work.”
