Chairman Engel's Travel to Cyprus

CHAIRMAN ENGEL’S TRAVEL TO CYPRUS

 

Nicosia, Cyprus—Representative Eliot L. Engel, Chairman of the House Committee on Foreign Affairs, today concluded an official visit to Cyprus. Chairman Engel met with senior government officials, including President Nicos Anastasiades, Foreign Minister Nikos Christodoulides, and Defense Minister Savvas Angelides. In his meetings, Chairman Engel underscored his years-long support for Cyprus and his hope for closer cooperation between the United States and Cyprus on issues from energy to regional security to efforts to counter Russia.

 

Chairman Engel also met with United Nations Special Representative Elizabeth Spehar, head of mission of the UN Peacekeeping Force in Cyprus (UNFICYP) to receive an update on efforts to address the Cyprus dispute.

 

Additionally, Chairman Engel visited the Commission on Missing Persons Laboratory. He received an update from the commission on efforts to identify the remains of those killed in years past and expressed his commitment to helping the families of those lost find closure.
