Congressman Engel: Republicans in Congress ‘Out of Touch’ With the American People

WASHINGTON, D.C.—Congressman Eliot L. Engel (D-NY), a senior member of the House Energy and Commerce Committee, issued the following statement in response to continued Republican obstruction in Congress:

“Yesterday, I watched President Obama speak with great emotion about the desperate need for commonsense measures that would help stem the tide of gun violence that has gripped our country. Today, in response to that impassioned call to action from the President, the Republicans have decided to waste precious legislative days with yet another vote to take health care away from 22 million Americans. This will now be the 62nd time the House has taken this ridiculous vote, wasting everyone’s time on legislation that the President will surely veto.

“The disconnect between what our country needs to do to move forward and what the Republicans have prioritized for their 2016 agenda is striking. We continue to have pointless, partisan votes—such as trying to repeal the Affordable Care Act 62 times and barring funding for Planned Parenthood, an organization that provides vital preventative services to more than 2 million Americans. Meanwhile, we cannot even get a vote on a bill to stop suspected terrorists from buying assault rifles. As President Obama said yesterday, that’s not right. That can’t be right.

“On health care, gun violence, stagnant wages, and exploding college loan debt, House Republicans are completely out of touch. It’s unfortunate that only one day into the new Congressional session, House Republicans are already laying out such disappointing priorities.”
