Congressman Engel Statement on the Passing of Elie Wiesel

Bronx, NY — Representative Eliot L. Engel (NY-16) today made the following statement on the passing of Holocaust Survivor, author, activist, and Nobel Laureate Elie Wiesel:

“A light has gone out of the world today.  For generations, Elie Wiesel was a model of courage and resilience, peace and forgiveness, and the fierce conviction that indifference to suffering should never again allow evil to prevail.  It was an evil Elie knew firsthand. He worked the rest of his life to fight that evil and to ensure the world would never forget what happened.

“Now that he has passed on, we need to make sure that Elie’s message and spirit continue to guide us.  After all, seven decades after the Shoah, anti-Semitism continues to threaten Jewish communities around the world.  Men and women continue to suffer hatred and violence because of where they were born, how they worship, or who they love.  The best way to remember his life and mark his passing is to keep working to build the world he envisioned for our children and grandchildren.  He will be dearly missed.”
