Energy & Commerce Committee Passes Engel Palliative Care and Hospice Education and Training Act

Washington D.C.—Yesterday, the Palliative Care and Hospice Education and Training Act (H.R. 1676), legislation authored by Congressman Eliot L. Engel, unanimously passed in the House Energy and Commerce Committee. It now awaits consideration by the full House.

Congressman Engel offered the following remarks on the bill during this morning’s full Committee markup:

Thank you, Mr. Chairman and Ranking Member Pallone.

I am proud to be the sponsor of H.R. 1676, the Palliative Care and Hospice Education and Training Act, and I am so pleased to see this bill moving forward today.

The goal of palliative care is to alleviate suffering for patients and their loved ones, accompanying efforts to treat or cure illness. Palliative care can help patients and families cope with the symptoms, stress and pain of illness, but too many aren’t aware of these benefits. There is also a shortage of educated providers who can offer quality palliative care.

My Palliative Care and Hospice Education and Training Act addresses these issues by expanding opportunities for training in palliative and hospice care. This bill also seeks to better educate patients, families and health professionals about palliative care’s benefits, and encourages NIH to expand research around this topic.

I think that all of us, unfortunately, have known a loved one who has faced a serious or life-threatening illness, so we know too well the confusion and stress those situations bring. This bill will help us ensure there is a well-trained palliative and hospice care workforce available to care for patients and bring much-needed relief to families.

I want to thank Congressman Tom Reed and Congressman Buddy Carter for co-authoring this bill, and all of the bill’s 284 bipartisan cosponsors.

I urge my colleagues to support this legislation, and I yield back the balance of my time.
