Engel, Benedetto, King, Bailey Write to Bronx Postmaster Urging Immediate Action On Missing Mailboxes

Bronx, NY—Congressman Eliot L. Engel, Assemblyman Michael Benedetto, City Council Member Andy King, and State Senator-elect Jamaal Bailey wrote the following letter to Bronx Postmaster Lilliam Rodriguez requesting the Post Office take immediate action to help Bronx residents send their holiday mail by setting up mobile mail collection points throughout the borough to replace missing mailboxes that have been removed for replacement:

Lilliam Rodriguez

Bronx Postmaster

800 Manida Street-Room 109
Bronx, New York 10474

Dear Postmaster Rodriguez:

We are writing to express our dismay at the recent decision by the Postal Service to remove mailboxes throughout Co-op City and other portions of the Bronx without immediately replacing them. This plan was poorly timed given the upcoming holiday season, and was done without any prior notice offered to the community or the local elected officials who represent the area. We find this to be unacceptable.

Our offices have been flooded with calls from constituents, many of whom are elderly or disabled, expressing their anger and frustration with the current lack of mailboxes in their neighborhood. As you are well aware, this is the busiest time of year for mail delivery—starting a project of this magnitude now was ill-conceived.

While we are grateful that the Postal Service is responding to the local issue of mail being taken and tampered with by replacing the mailboxes, it could have been done so at a different time with far less of an impact on the community. To rectify this issue, we are requesting the Postal Service set up some kind of interim or mobile mail collection stations throughout the neighborhood, and we demand to know the exact timeframe for replacement of all the mailboxes in our area.

                                                                                    Sincerely,
