Engel Condemns President Trump’s “New” Immigration Policy

Washington, D.C. – Congressman Eliot L. Engel issued the following statement condemning President Trump’s immigration policy:

“The President’s ‘new’ immigration policy is anything but. He continues to beat the same old xenophobic drum while trying to keep as many people out of the country as he can. A physical wall along the U.S.-Mexico border, establishing a merit-based immigration system that favors individuals who are English proficient, pushing asylum seekers away, providing no pathway to citizenship for Dreamers or TPS recipients—these are the same bad ideas he and Stephen Miller have been proposing for years. These types of policies, much like their family separation policy, run completely counter to our values as a nation.

“My House colleagues and I have rejected these shameful policies in the past and we would not hesitate to do so again. The United States is a nation of immigrants, whether this President wants to admit it or not. This ‘new’ plan is more of the awful same.”
