Engel Cosponsors Gold Star Family Tax Relief Act

Washington, D.C.—Congressman Eliot L. Engel, a top member on the House Energy and Commerce Committee, has cosponsored H.R. 2481, the Gold Star Family Tax Relief Act, which provides necessary tax relief to Gold Star Families on their survivor benefits.

Gold Star Families include the immediate relatives of service members who died while serving their country. H.R. 2481 will fix a consequence of the GOP tax bill that significantly raised the tax rates for Gold Star Families on children’s assets, including survivor benefits, forcing them to pay upwards of 20 percent more on such income. The bill would classify those survivor benefits as earned income, significantly reducing the tax burden.

“It’s incredible to me every time I hear President Trump talk about honoring Gold Star Families, considering his disastrous tax scam now forces them to pay drastically more in taxes,” Engel said. “For a President who boasts about how much he loves our troops, the hypocrisy is quite astounding. Gold Star Families have already paid the ultimate price for our nation. It is wrong to force them to literally pay more, especially in the name of a tax break for the ultra-rich.

“The 2017 GOP Tax Scam bill was horrible from the start, and this is just the latest example of the destructive impact it’s having on everyday Americans. The previous Republican Majority pushed this unfair, pro-corporate bill through Congress for their wealthy friends without understanding or caring about the consequences. We need to dump the whole thing, and we can start by scrapping this unfair tax increase on Gold Star Families.”
