Engel Decries Trump's U.K. Embarrassment

WASHINGTON—Representative Eliot L. Engel, Ranking Member of the House Committee on Foreign Affairs, today made the following statement:

“After threatening to splinter the NATO alliance on Wednesday, President Trump is again acting like a loose cannon when it comes to the special relationship that has symbolized the post-World War II international order. His insulting and patronizing treatment of the British Prime Minister is a staggering embarrassment, and his sticking his nose into British domestic politics is another indication that President Trump is entirely unmoored.

“Fortunately, the U.S.-U.K. relationship is strong enough to weather the Trump tempest. The centuries of shared history and values; the deep cultural, political, and economic ties; and the unshakable bond between our people will ensure that the friendship endures. However, even with his attempts at damage control today, the President has left another mess in his wake and harmed America’s standing on the global stage.”
