Engel Meets with Yonkers AFT Union Reps in Washington

Washington D.C.—Congressman Eliot Engel was pleased to welcome American Federation of Teachers (AFT) Union members Anthony Nicodemo and Charles Johnson to Washington on Wednesday to discuss a host of education related issues, including tackling student loan debt and the need for greater funding in our schools.

“It’s always a pleasure to discuss why a high-quality education is necessary to provide students with the proper foundation to succeed in life,” Engel said. “It’s especially nice when friends from Yonkers make the trek to Washington to have that important conversation. As a former school teacher myself, I know first hand how committed folks like Anthony and Charles are to their students and I greatly appreciate their advocacy work, especially during the summer when they’re off. This year we’ve already passed record funding for education in the House and we will continue to explore new ways to end the crippling student loan crisis.”

"We're really grateful to have the support of Congressman Engel in Washington,” said Nicodemo, a Yonkers teacher and AFT member. “Having staunch supporters in a time when public education is under attack is so important. Funding public education should be a priority to all lawmakers."
