Engel On President Trump’s Latest Executive Order Aimed at Undermining the ACA

WASHINGTON D.C.— Congressman Eliot L. Engel, a top Member of the House Energy and Commerce Committee, made the following statement regarding President Trump’s Executive Order:

“The American people were loud and clear when they rejected Trumpcare. They refused to let Republicans turn back the clock by gutting consumer protections and safeguards for people with pre-existing conditions. I was honored to stand alongside them, and I hoped Trumpcare’s repeated failures would motivate Republicans to work with Democrats to make our health care system better.

“But with this Executive Order, the President has once again rejected the will of the American people.

“He is willing to let insurers sell bare-bones plans, segregating sick Americans into an increasingly unaffordable market, all to manufacture the ‘collapse’ of the Affordable Care Act. While the full consequences of this Executive Order will become clearer as federal agencies act on it, we do know that this falls in line with a pattern of sabotage the Administration has carried out since January 20th – from shrinking the ACA enrollment period, to slashing the enrollment advertising  budget, to continually threatening to pull insurance subsidies, the Trump Administration’s assault on the ACA has been relentless. Sadly, today’s order represents the most blatant act of sabotage yet.

“The President has insisted that his Administration does not ‘own’ the future of the ACA. And while the American people weren’t buying that claim before, there can truly be no question now: the President and his fellow Republicans in Congress bear full responsibility for the future of our health care system.”
