Engel Rips President Trump’s Horrific Budget Proposal

Congressman Eliot L. Engel issued the following statement in response to President Trump’s budget proposal:

“Once again the President is attempting to slash critical spending on programs that every day Americans depend on. This latest budget proposal makes significant cuts to Social Security, Medicare, education, SNAP, and environmental protections, while showering more benefits on big corporations and the ultra-wealthy. It also includes funding for his ridiculous wall, which remains a non-starter for Democrats.

“The President’s budget continues the Trump Administration’s war on working Americans, middle-class families, and seniors. He proposes ripping half a trillion dollars from Medicare, eliminating $900 billion from Medicaid, and cutting $200 billion from SNAP. He also plans to block grant Medicaid, which would take coverage away from millions of low-income and vulnerable families.

“The draconian cuts continue with our nation’s public education system, where the President proposes cutting nearly $5 billion from K-12 education programs. This would devastate programs to help vulnerable student populations attend school, teacher training programs, and afterschool and summer programs. Additionally, this budget would funnel billions toward private school vouchers and would eliminate the Public Service Loan Forgiveness program, which assists aspiring public servants like teachers and social workers by forgiving their student loans. Clearly, the President thinks we should be making it harder for students to pay off their student loans, not easier.

“The President’s budget then calls for almost $200 billion dollars in SNAP cuts. SNAP is a life-saving program that millions of Americans depend on, regardless of zip code. Moreover, the President seeks to implement a rule that would make it harder for a state to provide food assistance for thousands of Americans in high-unemployment areas. Again, another immoral move by the President.

“The President’s proposed budget also includes substantial reductions to federal environmental programs, showcasing his endless disdain for clean energy innovation and the health of our environment. It cuts the Environmental Protection Agency by 26 percent, reducing its workforce to its lowest level since 1986. It slashes funding for applied energy research and development, and other non-defense energy programs by more than half, while also eliminating clean energy tax credits and advanced technology loan programs. Despite the intensifying risks from climate change, this President is continuing his reckless campaign to dismantle the protections that keep our air and water clean and safe while putting the profits of polluters ahead of the American people.

“Last but certainly not least, this budget once again calls for funding to build a physical wall along the U.S.-Mexico border. As I have said from the beginning, this is a waste of taxpayer money and does nothing to fix our immigration system. The President is also seeking more money for ICE agents, and a 30% increase for ICE detention beds. Doubling down on inhumane policies that tear families apart shouldn’t be the cornerstone of a president’s immigration plan, but here we are.

“In short, this budget proposal is a disaster that has no shot of moving forward in the House. Instead of inflicting devastating cuts to critical lifelines, President Trump and Mitch McConnell’s do-nothing Senate should take up one of the more than 275 bipartisan bills the House has passed to strengthen health coverage, protect the environment, fund our public schools, protect immigrants, fight public health crises, and reduce the cost of prescription drugs.”
