Engel Statement on Administration Plan to Send 4,000 More Troops to Afghanistan

ENGEL STATEMENT ON ADMINISTRATION PLAN TO SEND 4,000 MORE TROOPS TO AFGHANISTAN

WASHINGTON—Representative Eliot L. Engel, Ranking Member of the House Committee on Foreign, today made the following statement on the Trump Administration’s reported plan to send an additional 4,000 American troops to Afghanistan:

“I am deeply concerned by reports that the administration plans to send 4,000 additional troops to Afghanistan without a coherent and workable strategy that explains to the Congress and the American people why more troops are required.

“We all want this war to come to a responsible end that leads to a stable Afghanistan able to secure the gains made over the course of the last 15 years.  That will take careful planning.  We need to hear how the Administration hopes to achieve its goals in Afghanistan—and why this strategy requires putting more American men and women in harm’s way.”
