Engel Statement on Montefiore Plans to Close Mt. Vernon Hospital and Open New Facility

Congressman Eliot L. Engel issued the following statement:

“Recently, my office was alerted to plans by Montefiore to close the Montefiore Mount Vernon Hospital and open a new $41 million facility on Sandford Boulevard. In response to this news, I spoke yesterday with Montefiore President Steve Safyer who confirmed these plans, which are set to take roughly 14 months to complete, and he assured me that the current hospital will remain open in the interim. I made clear to Dr. Safyer that the health care needs of the community must be the top priority for Montefiore, and I requested more details regarding how they plan to deliver care to Mount Vernon residents. I also suggested that Montefiore hold community meetings to explain their plan and that they reach out to every elected official in the area to hear our concerns. I feel strongly that community input and transparency are critical to this development. Many parts of Southern Westchester and the north Bronx are already considered medically underserved. We need to make sure this move does not exacerbate the issue. I eagerly await more details from Montefiore.”
