Engel Statement on Pakistan's Election

WASHINGTON—Representative Eliot L. Engel, Ranking Member of the House Committee on Foreign Affairs, today released the following statement:

“I want to congratulate the many millions of Pakistanis who braved various hardships to cast their votes yesterday.  I was hopeful that Pakistan would build upon its 2013 elections which saw the country’s first successful democratic transition from one civilian government to another. But, I take very seriously the allegations that Pakistan’s military played an outsized role in shaping the electoral environment in advance of the elections.

“Elections allow citizens’ voices to be heard, and the stifling of free press and free assembly has stripped the people of Pakistan of this right.

“I look forward to working with whatever government comes to power to advance our shared interests, but note with disappointment, yet another missed opportunity to advance democracy in Pakistan.”
