Engel Statement On Recent Threats Made Against Jewish Community Centers

Washington D.C.—Congressman Eliot L. Engel, a leading member on the House Energy and Commerce Committee, issued the following statement in response to recent threats made against Jewish Community Centers:

“Jewish Community Centers across the United States have received their third mass wave of bomb threats in recent weeks, resulting in several evacuations and disturbances to the American Jewish community from New York to California.

“These threats are deeply disturbing, and they are an obvious assault on the Jewish community. While no bombs have been found in any of these cases, this requires immediate attention, increased vigilance, and a forceful stand against hate. Without a unified front against this rising tide of violent rhetoric, these threats can lead to horrific tragedy.

“Sadly, our new administration has not spoken out against, or responded to, the rising tide of bigotry. These threats cannot be excused or swept under the rug.  Fighting anti-Semitism—like all forms of hate—must not become a partisan issue. Anti-Semitic acts deserve condemnation from both sides of the aisle every single time.

“I will continue to condemn these hateful acts in the strongest possible terms, and I stand ready to assist the Jewish community—and others who faces such harassment—as well as local and federal authorities to safeguard community centers of all faiths across this country.”
