Engel Statement on Reports of Commerce Secretary Wilbur Ross Threatening NOAA Officials

Congressman Eliot L. Engel issued the following statement on reports Commerce Secretary Wilbur Ross threatened officials from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA):

“In any other Administration, Wilbur Ross’ threatening of NOAA officials would be a major scandal. In the Trump Administration, it’s just another day. Strong arming government workers to back the outrageous statements of the President is the mark of a dictatorship, not an open democracy. We’ve seen this type of mistreatment of government workers in other agencies as well, including the State Department, which I’m investigating as Chair of the Foreign Affairs Committee.

“It’s easy to become numb to things like this. When you have an Administration that starts a new fire every day, it’s hard to focus on any one to put out. Well, it’s our job to never normalize or accept this shocking behavior. Wilbur Ross had proved he was not capable of serving as Commerce Secretary long before he threatened government officials. Now his actions require a thorough government investigation and if the reports are true, he should resign.”
