Engel Statement on Reports the President’s Lawyers Are Exploring Ways to Undermine the Mueller Investigation

Washington D.C.—Congressman Eliot L. Engel issued the following statement:

“Reports that the President’s lawyers are looking into ways to undermine the credibility of the Mueller investigation are outrageous. This once again highlights why we need an independent commission, one that would be shielded from these types of veiled or intentional threats, to investigate the ties between Russia and the Trump campaign. In addition, the reports also claim the President’s lawyers are looking into whether he has the authority to pardon himself. First, he doesn’t. Second, if the President and his campaign did nothing wrong, why would he need to protect himself and his staff with a presidential pardon? These swirling allegations of wrongdoing become more bizarre every day, and we need to get to the bottom of it with an independent commission.”
