Engel Statement on Supreme Court DACA Decision

Bronx, NY – Congressman Eliot L. Engel issued the following statement on the Supreme Court’s DHS v. Regents of the University of California decision:

“This is a great win for our country. President Trump’s racist attempt to deport DACA recipients has been knocked down by the Supreme Court, and rightly so. I have always been on the side of DACA recipients, from the very beginning. I joined my House colleagues on an Amicus Brief to the Supreme Court in defense of DACA recipients, and I am thrilled to see our work was fruitful. DACA has offered protected status and work authorization to hundreds of thousands hardworking young DREAMers brought to this country as children by their parents, who are integral parts of our society. We have always been a country of immigrants and will continue to be, regardless of what this President or anyone else thinks.

“Now, with DACA recipients protected from this attempt by the President to rescind it, it is critical that there is a permanent solution provided for DREAMers. That means providing a pathway to citizenship. Last year, I was happy to help pass H.R. 6, the ‘American Dream and Promise Act,’ which would provide a pathway to citizenship for DREAMers as well as TPS and DED holders. It is beyond time for the Senate to pass this bill. The COVID-19 crisis is only compounding an already difficult situation for DACA recipients and their families. They need relief.”
