Engel Statement on Train Derailment in Rye

Washington D.C.— Congressman Eliot L. Engel, a senior member of the House Energy and Commerce Committee, released the following statement on the Metro-North train derailment in Rye yesterday:

“Last evening’s train derailment in Rye requires a thorough investigation, and I appreciate the National Transportation Safety Board’s quick response to the scene. We have witnessed too many train derailments in recent years, which is why we clearly must have Positive Train Control (PTC) implemented on our railways sooner rather than later. I supported the passage of legislation requiring PTC implementation all the way back in 2008. Nearly a decade later we still do not have this critical technology installed on our trains, and the accidents continue. It’s long past time that we upgraded our rail lines and retrofitted all our trains with PTC technology.”
