"Strong job growth continued in May, and the overall trends have the labor market moving in the right direction," Congressman Engel said. "After a rough winter, the economic recovery has come back strong. "The new fiscal year 2016 GOP budget, which passed earlier this week, doesn't improve wages or grow the middle class. Instead, Republicans want to vote on privatizing Medicare, gutting Medicaid, and repealing the Affordable Care Act. Again. Instead of slashing important programs, we should raise the minimum wage, invest in our future, and make it easier for families to put away money for college and retirement. It's time to stop the political pandering and do something to bring the recovery home for every working household."

"I did not vote for the sequester in 2011 because it was bad policy then, just as it remains bad policy today," Congressman Engel said. "The mindless austerity measures taken four years ago have been counterproductive to our economic recovery, limiting its potential by curtailing government spending in research, education, and defense. Our economy has improved drastically in spite of austerity, not because of it. I applaud President Obama for offering a budget that finally ends sequestration, which will allow us to grow the middle-class and put more Americans back to work in the industries that drive innovation."

"I am renewing my call to Speaker Boehner to allow for a simple up-or-down vote on extending unemployment insurance. Economic recoveries don't take place overnight. It's going to take more time for our economy to fully recover, and House Republicans should work with the Democratic Caucus to ensure that no American workers are left out."

"Our economy continues to recover and Americans are returning to work. But more must be done. Imagine what we could do if Congress worked in unison with the recovery. A jobs bill would make vital investments in our nation's infrastructure, and provide a needed boost to the construction and transportation sectors. With underemployment rates at high levels, we must continue to push for new measures to ensure a sustainable, long-term recovery."
