Medicare, Medicaid and CHIP

Medicare is the federal health insurance program for:
  • People who are 65 or older
  • Certain younger people with disabilities
  • People with End-Stage Renal Disease (permanent kidney failure requiring dialysis or a transplant, sometimes called ESRD)

The Social Security Administration manages enrollment in Medicare.
 
Medicaid provides health coverage to millions of Americans, including eligible low-income adults, children, pregnant women, elderly adults and people with disabilities. The Children's Health Insurance Program (CHIP) provides medical coverage for individuals under age 19 through Medicaid and separate CHIP programs. CHIP is administered by New York state to meet or exceed federal requirements. Information about New York state CHIP, including how to apply.
